Pre-Shadowing Reflection

A fundamental part of growing up is wondering what job an individual will pursue. Some become authors, many choose engineering while others follow their passion for science into diverse careers; like for example, medicine. In my case, ever since I was a child, I have had a fascination with the world of science; specifically, biology. Through this innate interest and appreciation nurtured in me, and my desire to have a positive impact in my community, I wish to pursue a career as a future medical professional.

I decided to embark in this opportunity to learn more about a medical field that interested me: Orthopedics. Through this COOP Practice, which is based on a Doctor Shadowing in Orthopedic Surgery with Dr. José A. Cancio, I will be exposed to both office and surgical procedures, where I will learn to read X-rays and MRIs and identify the materials used during surgeries. In addition, I will observe up close the diagnosis regiment and the treatment of bone fractures all throughout the human body.

By observing first-hand various surgical procedures and the upmost patient-care, I will be given a valuable opportunity that will help me determine which career option would best fit me. As a result of shadowing Dr. José A. Cancio, I hope to witness the day-to-day activities within an office, gain clinical experience, understand patient interactions, and finally, develop a deeper understanding of the responsibilities of a healthcare provider. Thus, by exploring my interests in this field, I will gain insight on a portion of the world of medicine, and by applying the knowledge I gain from this unforgettable experience, I too could make a difference.
